Notes From Supergirl

My Diary from the Trenches

Day 95

September3

Well if I thought yesterday had ups and downs, today took the cake. This timeline is the best way to explain it:

8:30 am: Resident comes in and tells me white cells are still really low but counts should jump after neupogen shots that start today. Good possibility I could go home this weekend if I’m not neutropenic.

9:00 am: Nurse comes in and says she doesn’t see why I wouldn’t go home this weekend and she’s working on getting all of my meds sent home with home care nursing. At this point I am pleasantly surprised by the news and getting excited.

9:30 am: Infectious disease doctor comes in and says I’m doing great. I mention going home this weekend and he laughs and says that he doesn’t think I’m going home until my stem cells have been harvested (another week from now). I tell my nurse who says that doesn’t make sense but I need to wait for oncology doctor doing rounds to confirm.

11:00 am: Oncology doc comes in with resident team and agrees that no, I am not going home until stem cells are harvested. I have a breakdown, talk to my friends that were visiting, pull myself together and accept the fact that I will be here for another week.

3:00 pm: Different resident comes in and says she has consulted with my bone marrow coordinator and my oncologist (not the same one that came in at 11) and they are in agreement that I can go home Monday if my counts are good. I just have to come to hospital daily next week for blood checks (which I was planning to do anyway). Ugh.

So I’m just going to take things day by day. If I go home before Friday, great, I’ll be thrilled. But I’m mentally prepared to be here another week now and I’ll just figure out how to pass the time.

For tonight, Brian came to visit and we’re playing an intense game of Scrabble. Brian was off to a good start with a first word of “jalapeno,” which racked him up 110 points. That’s probably the most points Brian ever has and ever will score on a Scrabble word. Good job Bri. However, I’m hot on his trail now and suspect I’ll pass him shortly.

I’m in a good mood and still feeling good about my progress and overall health. I hope to come home and see everyone soon but in the meantime feel free to visit. I’m looking forward to doing a craft project with Stephanie (my sister-in-law) tomorrow, seeing my dad, and then seeing Hillary in the evening. Lots of distractions to keep me from going crazy!

Incredible! They really need to be on the same page before boosting you up and then bursting your bubble like that. Very unfair. Hang tough, my friend. Another week in the grand scheme of things is not so long. YOU CAN DO THIS!!! oxxo

I didn’t think Brian could even spell jalapeno.

I agree with Heather. They really shouldn’t mislead you, or give you inconsistent messages. They need to communicate with each other in addition to you! That being said, if they feel it is best for you to stay, then hard to argue with them, and you will do everything possible to eat well and build some strength, and rest, while there. We are always thinking of you!

I can only spell it because I have been making lots of salsa lately and grew my own this year. I have been looking at that word a lot and got really lucky.

And for the record, although the game isn’t over (put it aside), she did pass me. I hate that game… I sooooo suck at it.
